Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an alternative heat source that provides your space heating and hot water.  Air Source types  will typically be sited outside of your property in a large metal box.  Ground Source units will be located inside with some form of ground collector.  In addition this this unit, a smaller buffer tank and hot water cylinder is also required.

Air Source Heat Pump

It uses the low temperature heat from the outside air or and multiplies it using a electric powered compressor and a refrigerant that is constantly changing from liquid to gas and back again.  It uses the same principle as the refrigerator in your kitchen, but in reverse.

A critical feature is the Coefficient of Performance (COP).  This is the energy multiplier i.e. you put in 1 kW of electrical energy and you get out 3kW of heat energy, this means you have a COP of 3.

Common throughout mainland Europe GSHP’s are seeing an increasing demand in the UK. They replace your boiler and act by extracting the energy from the ground around your property, which serves as a battery continually being recharged by the sun. Used in conjunction with under-floor heating, the GSHP can produce 4kW of energy for every 1kW used to power the pump, making it more than four times more efficient than oil or gas  Boilers

Installation

Heat Pumps are the most challenging technology to retrofit to an older property with radiators. They are best suited to work with underfloor heating, however newer heat pumps are arriving on the market with higher flow temperatures which address many of these issues.  Fan coil radiators also solve some of the problems of flow temperaure.
