Biomass Heating Solar Heat Pumps

Farm Renewable Heating Solutions

Farms are perfect for a biomass heating system as they tend to have a large amount of land and many buildings that require heating or hot water. This makes these types of buildings ideal for district heating projects with biomass boilers.

Ideal for farmland:

Most farmers will have access to a large supply of wood or have woodland with their farms, allowing access to seasoned wood for log gasification boilers. As farmers tend to be more hands on by nature, as their business is very demanding, having a manual fed boiler is not a great concern. We can supply and install fully automated boilers as well.

Farms and farmland typically require boilers in capacity of 45kW upwards. Since farmers pay business rates for taxation then they automatically qualify for the Commercial Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) allowing them to claim 7.6p/kWh (October 2014) for every unit of heating or hot water they supply to their business or associated buildings. These buildings require heat metering and payments from the RHI are determined by these meters.

We recommend:

Installations that are most appealing to farmers are:

  • Fully automated wood pellet boilers with either an external or internal pellet store.
  • Fully automated wood chip boilers with external or internal wood chips stores (some farmers have wood chips as a waste product of their business).
  • Manual fed log boilers either with an internal set up of log boiler with a large accumulator tank or an external boiler that doesn't require an accumulator tank.

The Solar Option:

Farms also have the potential for solar thermal as a viable option as they tend to have large amounts of land available for installing a solar thermal array or to have a large roof space that gets plenty of sunlight.

Different types of farms have different requirements, a dairy farm would need a supply of hot water to clean out dairy sheds; this could be up to a couple of thousand litres of hot water a day. There are numerous possibilities to incorporate biomass or solar thermal to provide farms with a plentiful supply of hot water.
